Welcome back!
Today, I want to talk about what it's like being a student athlete. That includes the good and the bad. So, let's get started.
Being a collegiate student athlete has been the biggest blessing of my life. I get to play the sport that I love, all while going to school for free. It doesn't get much better than that.
But even though I have this amazing opportunity, it comes with sacrifices.
Imagine not being able to have a spring break or summer vacation until your senior year of high school because you are traveling for basketball tournaments. Imagine having to meet and talk with hundreds of different coaches in order to figure out if you like and fit into their program. And imagine having to narrow your list down to just one by the middle of your senior year.
And this is all in preparation of college.
But nothing really prepares you for the challenges that you face when you start playing college sports.
I was constantly lost on campus, unbelievably sore, and almost stopped going to class. But I knew I had to train myself to have a stronger mindset, the same way I was training my body.
I have worked and pushed myself to limits I didn't think were possible, all for the love of my sport. And I would do it over and over again in order to have the opportunities I have been given.
As I mentioned in my last blog, I have never had the time to get hands on work experience in my field of study. But I have been able to do a lot of interesting things due to basketball.
I am a part of SAAC (student athlete advisory committee) and I am also the representative from our team for the SEC women's basketball leadership council. Being in these committees has allowed me to meet the SEC commissioner, and work with him and other members on different legislative rules that affects the SEC and its players.
Although I have had to give up many things in order to live out this dream and earn the things I have, I wouldn't want to do anything else with my life. And for that, I will forever be thankful for the people who helped get me here.
